No Radioactive Material Found on Plane at JFKOctober 23, 2002
Investigators didnt find any radioactive material on an Aeroflot jetliner at New Yorks Kennedy International Airport, U.S. Customs Service spokeswoman Janet Rapaport said.
One passenger was taken into custody after agents of the U.S.
Federal Bureau of Investigation, customs service and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey searched the plane, she said.
Investigators boarded the jetliner that landed at 1:45 p.m., local time, after receiving information from Russia that they should question one passenger about radioactive material, Rapaport said.
"We are still examining luggage, cargo and the plane itself," she said.
The plane stayed on the airport tarmac. The rest of the 176 passengers were moved to the terminal by bus, Rapaport said. They were screened for radiation contamination and are to be processed by customs and immigration officials before continuing their flights.
Aeroflot Flight 317 originated in Moscow and was headed to Washington, with a stop in New York.
Flights into and out of the airport werent disrupted, port authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco said. The port authority operates the airport along with Newark International Airport in New Jersey and LaGuardia Airport in New York.
