Port Lockout Still Affects BusinessesOctober 21, 2002
(Portland-AP) -- Nearly two weeks after a judge ended the West Coast port labor lockout, retailers are still faced with a nightmare of confused schedules and late merchandise.
According to The Oregonian sporting goods and auto accessory giant G.I. Joe's already has ads ready for its Thanksgiving kickoff of the holiday shopping season. They tout specials on pool tables, radio-controlled cars and camping gear. The problem is, the merchandise hasn't reached stores yet. The Wilsonville-based chain says its holiday merchandise likely won't begin arriving for another three weeks -- and some may not show up until late November.
Twelve days after longshoremen returned to the docks after the 12-day lockout, a logjam of ships persists at 29 ports in Oregon, Washington and California and massive numbers of containers are waiting to be unloaded.
